Florence was born 12th May 1820 in Florence, Italy.
Florence parents were rich. She was young when she decided that she
want do something useful with her life. She want to be a nurse, but
her parent didn't want it because they want to get her married. The
most of the middle-class women didn't have a career. She went to
Germany to learn about nursing. In 1854, Florence and her team of 38
nurses went to Crimea (near Turkey). There they helped wounded
soldiers. The military hospital were dirty and badly, so Florence
made the hospital clean and safe. When she walked around at the
hospital at the night she always had a lamp with her and that's why
she got the nickname “The lady with the Lamp”. After the Crimean
War Florence wrote a book about how to make hospitals better. She
also said that nurses should learn through both experience and
training. Florence died the 13th August 1910 in London.
